Free AI chat apps without ads

The short answer

As of 1 September 2026, one big assistant serves ads. That is ChatGPT. Free and Go accounts see them. Plus and above do not. Europe joined on 24 August 2026.

Four free options carry no ads today:

Google Gemini
Claude
Mistral Vibe
MultiChats

Every one of them is capped. None is unlimited. Anyone promising you unlimited free AI is selling something else.

The useful question is where each free tier runs out. That is the rest of this piece.

How to tell if you are in the ad tier

Two things decide it. Your plan, and whether you are signed in.

Ads reach logged in Free and Go accounts. Paid Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education accounts stay clear. Accounts registered as under 18 are excluded too.

The unit is easy to spot once you know the shape. It sits below the answer, carries a picture and a link, and is labelled as sponsored.

Google Gemini

Free with a Google account. No ads.

Google's own subscriptions page lists this on free:

Where it stops: Google publishes no free-tier numbers at all. It sells multipliers instead. AI Plus doubles the free limits and AI Pro quadruples them. Ultra advertises up to 20x, but the baseline for that number is Pro. You find the real ceiling by hitting it.

Pick this one if you want research reports and voice on a free tier.

Claude

Free, on web, iOS, Android and desktop. No ads.

Anthropic's pricing page puts web search, memory across conversations and extended thinking on the free plan.

Where it stops: Anthropic publishes no message counts anywhere. Its own pricing footnote says only that usage limits apply. Any site quoting you a hard token number for Claude Free is inferring it.

Good for careful writing and long reasoning. Awkward if you need to know your allowance in advance.

Mistral Vibe

Mistral's consumer app, at chat.mistral.ai. Free tier, no ads. Note the name: it was Le Chat, and Mistral now calls it Vibe.

Free gives you web and mobile access, image generation, and $10 a month of API credits.

Where it stops: Mistral's pricing page describes free as limited messages, limited web searches and limited coding sessions. It puts no number on any of the three.

The API credits are the unusual part. Most consumer free tiers give you an app. This one also gives you a small developer allowance.

Worth a look if European hosting matters to you.

No hedging:

50 messages a day, reset every 24 hours. Ten messages without an account.
Uploads: one image or PDF per message, up to 10MB, three a day.
Image generation: two every 30 days, on the web app only.
Web search: two every 30 days, on the web app only.
On mobile, image generation and web search are Pro features.
Saved memories are Pro.

Three apps we left off, and why

Some names come up constantly in this search. We could not verify their current ad status to the standard the rest of this list is held to, so they are not ranked above.

Microsoft Copilot. Its consumer pages blocked our checks on 1 September 2026.
Perplexity. It ran an ad programme, and is reported to have shut it down in February 2026 over trust concerns. That report traces back to a single aggregator, so we will not state it as fact.
DeepSeek. Free and heavily used, but we did not verify its terms here.

Missing from the list above means unverified. Nothing more.

The caveat worth stating

No ads today is only a promise about today.

Advertising spreads to free tiers first, because the people on them are paying nothing else. A free tier can gain sponsored units in a product update, with no announcement you would notice. Nobody sends an email about it.

So treat every "ad free" claim on this page as a snapshot dated 1 September 2026, this one included. Two things protect you. Knowing which tier you are on, and knowing that ad free tiers exist to switch to.

When paying starts to make sense

Free tiers are for trying things and for light use.

Paying earns its keep once you hit a cap more than once a week. It earns it again once you need something free simply gates, like regular image generation or web search.

The other trigger is quieter. You stop experimenting and settle on one assistant. From then on the free tier is a ceiling.

Until then, run the free tiers and read the limits first. The thing worth rechecking every few months is which tier of your assistant serves ads, because on ChatGPT that answer changed in August.
