The MultiChats model picker open inside an ongoing conversation, ready to switch to a different AI model

You are not locked to the model you started with. In MultiChats you can switch AI models mid-chat at any point, and the conversation stays exactly where it was. This guide shows you how to switch the model inside an open chat, on web and mobile, and confirms what most people worry about: your history is not cleared. By the end you will know the one move and the handful of moments worth using it.

Step-by-step: how to switch the model

The model button you used to start the chat is the same one you use to change it. It is thread-aware, so picking a new model applies to the chat you are already in. Here is the whole move.

  1. Open the chat you want to change. Any existing conversation works.

  2. Tap the model button. On web it sits in the composer; on mobile it is in the chat header at the top.

  3. The picker opens. On web the dialog is titled Select AI Model; on mobile it reads Select Model.

  4. Find the model you want. Use the search box, or the tabs. On web the tabs are per provider (OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, xAI, Llama, Mistral, Others). On mobile the tabs are labelled differently: you get All and Recommended first, then one tab per provider, with Google and Meta where web says Gemini and Llama, and no Others tab.

  5. Tap the model. The picker closes, and the new model name shows on the composer button (web) or in the chat header (mobile).

  6. Send your next message. The new model answers with the full chat as background.

That is it. There is no separate "change model" screen and no confirmation step to dig through. Not sure which model to pick? Our guide on how to pick the right AI model walks through the why.

Your conversation comes with you

This is the part people hesitate over, so let us be plain. When you switch the model mid conversation, nothing in the chat is deleted. Every earlier message stays in place, and the new model reads that history before it replies. You keep context when switching models, full stop.

Why does that matter? The new model only knows what fits in its context window, which is the running memory it reads each turn. Because MultiChats hands the whole thread to whichever model you pick, you do not re-paste your prompt or re-explain the setup. The model that answers next sees the same conversation the last one did.

MultiChats also remembers your choice per chat. The model you pick sticks to that thread, so reopening it later keeps the model you left it on. You can swap models in the same chat as many times as you like. If you want the deeper background, the blog post on switching AI models mid-conversation covers it.

When to switch mid-chat

You do not need a reason most of the time. But a few moments make switching genuinely useful:

  • You hit a wall. A fast model is stuck on a hard step, so escalate it to a stronger one. Claude Opus 5, for example, leads the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index as of August 2026, with GPT-5.6 close behind, so it is a sensible model to reach for when the answer has to be right.

  • You want a second take. Hand the same question to a different model and compare how the two answer.

  • You need a faster reply. Once the hard part is solved, drop back to a quick model for the easy follow-ups.

  • The reply missed the tone. A different model may write in a voice that fits better.

Free vs Pro models in the picker

Some models are free to switch to. Premium models carry a badge and need a paid plan. Here is the quick version.

Model type

How it looks

Who can switch to it

Free model

No badge; appears in the Free tab

Anyone, on any plan

Premium model

Shows a Pro badge, with a lock icon on mobile if you are on the free plan

Pro and Pro+ plans

The free plan includes more than a dozen models you can swap between freely as of August 2026. Pro at $20.99 a month and Pro+ at $34.99 a month open every model in the picker, so any ✦ Pro card becomes one tap away. On the free plan those cards stay dimmed and cannot be selected, so clicking or tapping one does nothing. On mobile the picker will not take you through the upgrade, so upgrade from your account menu or the plans section on the site; once upgraded, the model becomes selectable.

Switching checklist

Run down this list and you have done it right:

  • You opened the picker from inside the chat, not from a new one.

  • The dialog said Select AI Model (web) or Select Model (mobile).

  • The new model name shows on the composer button (web) or in the chat header (mobile).

  • Your earlier messages are all still there.

  • Your next reply reflects the earlier conversation, confirming context carried over.

FAQ

Can I change the AI model in the middle of a chat?

Yes. Open the model button inside any active chat, pick a different model from the Select AI Model dialog on web or Select Model on mobile, and your next message goes to the new model. You can do this as many times as you want in the same chat.

Will I lose the conversation if I switch models?

No. Switching models does not clear or truncate the chat. Every earlier message stays, and the new model reads the full history before it replies, so context carries over.

Why would I switch models mid-chat?

The most common reason is escalation: a fast model gets stuck on a hard step, so you hand it to a stronger model for that part. People also switch to get a second opinion, to match a tone, or to drop back to a quicker model for the easy follow-ups.

Are all models free to switch to?

No. Free models are open to everyone. Premium models carry a Pro badge, shown with a lock icon on mobile if you are on the free plan, and need a Pro or Pro+ plan. On the free plan those cards are dimmed and cannot be selected, so clicking or tapping one does nothing. Upgrade from the pricing page or your account settings first, then the model becomes selectable.

Does the new model remember which model I was using before?

Your selected model is saved per chat, so reopening the thread keeps the model you last left it on. The conversation history is shared across whatever models you use in that chat, so each new model sees everything that came before it.
